The wife of slain Bangladeshi-American NYPD officer Didarul Islam has given birth to their third child, a baby boy, just weeks after his tragic death. On Sunday, August 17, Jamila Islam delivered the child at a New York hospital. Both mother and newborn are reported to be in good health. The baby has been named Arham.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the news on Monday through a post on X, saying, “Amid tragedy, a new life has entered this world. Last night, Detective First Grade Didarul Islam’s wife, Jamila, gave birth to their beautiful son, Arham. He joins his two older brothers, Ahian and Azhan.”

Tisch added that Didarul’s legacy of service and courage would live on through his children. “The dedication Didar gave to this city will be remembered. Jamila, Ahian, Azhan, and now Arham will forever be part of the NYPD family.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams also assured the family of continued support, saying, “Detective Didar’s family will always be our family — part of the great family of New York City.” He personally visited Jamila and her newborn at the hospital on Sunday night.

Didarul Islam, who served at the NYPD’s 47th Precinct for three and a half years, was killed on July 28 in a mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan, which claimed four other lives. Three days later, on July 31, he was posthumously promoted to Detective and buried with full state honors in New Jersey.

Officer Didarul hailed from Magura in Kulaura, Moulvibazar, Bangladesh. He had been living with his wife and children in the Bronx at the time of his death.
