New York City is set to close its last hotel used to house migrants, the Row NYC Hotel, located on Eighth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The lease for the property will expire in April, and city officials have decided not to renew the contract.

Nearly three years ago, as shelters reached capacity amid an influx of migrants crossing the southern U.S. border and arriving in New York, the city turned to hotels as an alternative housing option. The Row Hotel was the first to be used for this purpose.

Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement that the city has “successfully helped more than 200,000 migrants leave the shelter system and take the next step toward self-sufficiency.” He added that efforts to support migrant resettlement and independence will continue.
