‘Nemesis’ Makes Strong Impact on New York Stage
Bengali theater once again drew attention among the Bangladeshi diaspora as Theater 71 Corporation staged its production of ‘Nemesis’ at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Written by Masum Reza and directed by Khairul Islam Pakhi, the play was presented in two shows at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., both drawing notable audiences.
The story explores ethical conflicts and the realities of expatriate life in North America. It follows Sabiullah, played by Khairul Islam Pakhi, an elderly man who comes to the United States after facing corruption allegations. His attempts to make money through unethical means and his troubled past create a psychological conflict with his independent daughter Nupur, played by Bannya Mirza.
Inspired by the Greek goddess of justice, Nupur seeks to hold her father accountable for his wrongdoing. The story ultimately delivers a message of forgiveness and self-purification through the intervention of his granddaughter Adhora, played by Tamanna Shanti Ahmed.
The production marked Bannya Mirza’s first performance on a New York stage. She also designed the costumes. Newcomer Tamanna Shanti Ahmed was also praised for her natural performance.
Other cast members included Sadia Khandaker, J.K. Rajya, Tamima Tithi, Urmi Rosario, Rana Masud, Shayla Aftab and Sultan Bokhari. Pinto Ghosh handled music, Babar Khademi lighting, and Mithun Ahmed designed the sets and props. Jacqueline Gomez coordinated the overall production.
Noted theater personality Professor Safi Ahmed and members of New York’s arts and cultural community attended the performances. Audience members said productions of this quality could further enrich Bengali theater among expatriate communities.
