Minneapolis Protests Grow Amid Controversy Over ICE Shooting Investigation
Public outrage over a fatal shooting by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis escalated on Friday as local officials criticized federal authorities for excluding them from the investigation.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, left 37-year-old motorist Renee Good dead. Minnesota law enforcement agencies said they were blocked from participating in the inquiry, with federal investigators taking custody of Good’s car and shell casings from the scene.
Footage reportedly filmed by the ICE officer involved shows interactions with Good near her vehicle, including commands to exit before shots were fired. While federal authorities have claimed the officer acted in self-defense, critics argue that the video does not clearly show the moment the car moved or the shooting itself.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the lack of local involvement in the probe, stating, “The fact that federal authorities have already drawn conclusions without including local investigators is deeply concerning.” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty echoed the call for a transparent investigation at the local level, launching an online portal for evidence submissions.
The controversy intensified after Vice President JD Vance publicly stated that the ICE officer, identified in media reports as Jonathan Ross, had “absolute immunity,” a claim disputed by local prosecutors. Court records show Ross was previously involved in a high-profile incident in June 2025, raising further scrutiny of his conduct.
Protests erupted outside federal facilities in Minneapolis, with demonstrators clashing with armed immigration officers using pepperball guns and tear gas. Organizers said approximately 1,000 protest events are planned nationwide over the weekend.
The case has also intersected with broader tensions between federal and local authorities, including disputes over federal financial aid and allegations of public benefit fraud among immigrant communities.
Renee Good’s wife, Becca Good, told reporters they had been at the scene to “support our neighbors,” highlighting growing community concern over federal enforcement practices.
The Minneapolis protests reflect ongoing national debate over ICE’s operations, local oversight, and accountability in law enforcement actions involving immigrant communities.
