Mary Zobaida Announces Candidacy for New York State Assembly District 36

Bangladeshi-American Mary Zobaida has announced her candidacy for the upcoming New York State Assembly District 36 election. She made the announcement on Saturday (September 13) afternoon at Dutch Kills Park in Astoria, in the presence of a large gathering of supporters and well-wishers.
The event was attended by mainstream politicians as well as prominent leaders from the South Asian community. Among them were Ataur Rahman Selim, President of Bangladesh Society; Mohammad Ali, General Secretary; veteran expatriate Abul Kalam; Assembly District 24 Democratic candidate Mahtab Khan; Zainal Abedin, President of the Bangladeshi American Advocacy Group; Fakhrul Islam Delowar, President of Jamaica Bangladesh Friends Society; and community activists Moinur Rahman Chowdhury and Syed Al Amin Russel, along with many others who expressed their support for Zobaida’s candidacy.
Leaders from other communities were also present, including Indian Sikh leader Japret Singh, Harlem community leader Julian Sezura, union leader Robert Rems, Monowarul Islam, President of New York Bangladesh Press Club, and A.F.M. Misbahur Rahman, Vice President of TBN-24. The program was conducted by Javed Uddin, Vice President of Jalalabad Association of America, and James Korza, Communication Director for Mary Zobaida.

In her speech, Mary Zobaida said, “New York City is a city of Democrats, a city of immigrants. Together, we must make this city better.” She called for everyone’s support and pledged to work collectively to implement her campaign agenda.
A large number of Bangladeshi-Americans and South Asian immigrants from Queens and other boroughs of New York City attended the event. Members of the Bangladeshi media were also present, including Nazmul Ahsan, Editor of Weekly Porichoy; Abu Taher, Editor of Weekly Bangla and CEO of Time Television; Ratan Talukdar, Editor of Weekly Janmobhumi; Mizanur Rahman, Editor of Weekly Desh; and Shahidul Islam, News Editor of Weekly Thikana.
