Explosion at Tennessee Explosives Plant Leaves Multiple Dead, 19 Missing

A powerful explosion ripped through a U.S. military explosives manufacturing plant in Tennessee on Friday, leaving several people dead and 19 others missing, authorities confirmed.

Emergency crews rushed to the Accurate Energetic Systems facility in the Bucksnort area of Hickman County after the blast, which was strong enough to be heard miles away. Aerial footage broadcast by local media showed smoking debris, twisted metal, and destroyed vehicles scattered across the site.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis told reporters that rescuers were searching for 19 missing workers. “There are fatalities, but I’m not going to release a number at this time,” Davis said. “It’s the most devastating scene I’ve seen in my career.”

Officials warned nearby residents to stay away due to fears of secondary explosions, as much of the plant had been engulfed in flames. Davis said the building at the center of the blast was completely leveled. “There’s nothing left to describe — it’s gone,” he added.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the explosion. Investigators from local, state, and federal agencies are expected to remain on-site through the weekend.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said the state was coordinating its response. “We ask Tennesseans to join us in prayer for the families affected by this tragic incident,” he wrote on X.

Accurate Energetic Systems, established in 1980, produces a range of explosive materials for the U.S. Department of Defense and industrial clients. The company was recently awarded a federal contract worth nearly $120 million for TNT procurement, according to Pentagon records.

As rescue efforts continued late Friday, officials said families of the missing workers were being supported by crisis teams. “It’s hell on everyone involved,” Sheriff Davis said.
