Europe Introduces ETIAS Authorization and Fee Hike for Canadian Travelers

10 November, 2025, 10:50 am

Canadians traveling to Europe will face new entry requirements and higher costs under the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), set to launch by late 2026. ETIAS is a digital pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors to the Schengen Area, aimed at strengthening border security across EU member states.

Applicants must submit an online form with a valid passport and security details. The application fee will increase from the originally proposed €7 to €20, funding enhanced border control technologies. Approved authorizations are valid for three years and allow multiple short-term stays. Some groups, such as minors and seniors, may be exempt from the fee.

ETIAS enables authorities to pre-screen travelers against EU security databases, including Interpol and Europol, which may lead to more detailed questioning at entry points. Travelers should ensure passports are valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure.

The new rules will require Canadians to plan and budget carefully, especially families and frequent visitors, but Europe remains a popular destination. Early application is advised to avoid travel disruptions.
