Election Commission Falls Behind on Party and Observer Registration

29 October, 2025, 6:27 am

The Election Commission (EC) has fallen behind schedule in completing the registration of new political parties and accrediting observer organisations ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

The process, initially opened seven months ago, was supposed to conclude in September for parties and by mid-October for observer groups. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed admitted on Monday that progress has been slower than planned. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to complete the process within this week,” he said.

Out of 143 applications received by June, 121 were rejected for failing to meet requirements. Field investigations were conducted for 22 parties, with two, the National Citizens Party (NCP) and Bangladesh National League, already approved. The EC is also reviewing domestic observer organisations, with journalists assisting to fill information gaps.

Several applicants expressed frustration at the delays. Masud Rana of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal criticized repeated investigations and the increased security deposit from Tk20,000 to Tk50,000. Sadek Ahmed Sajib of Moulik Bangla described the delay as “disappointing,” while Jasmine Tuli of the Electoral Reforms Commission urged swift completion and better communication from the EC.

The 13th parliamentary election is expected in early February, before Ramadan, with the official schedule likely to be announced in December.
