Eight Parties, Including Jamaat and NCP, to Launch July Charter Campaign
Eight political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP), are set to launch a joint campaign pressing for four key demands, with the immediate implementation of the July Charter at the top of their agenda.
The other demands include holding the next general election under a proportional representation (PR) system, ensuring a level playing field for all parties, and banning the activities of the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance, which the coalition labels as collaborators of fascism.
After several rounds of meetings, the parties reached consensus on the four-point demand and plan to announce separate press conferences soon, with the campaign expected to begin next week.
The parties participating in the initiative are: Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish (led by Maulana Mamunul Haque), two factions of Khelafat Majlish (led by Abdul Basit Azad and Ahmad Abdul Quader), Gono Adhikar Parishad (Nurul Haque), Amar Bangladesh Party (Mujibur Rahman Manju), and Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party (Sarwar Kamal Aziz).
While the parties share a common platform, differences remain over the scope of the PR system—some seek it for both houses of parliament, while others propose it only for the upper house. Leaders emphasized that elections should be held in the first half of February under the July Charter framework.
