New York Police have arrested Dinesh Mazumdar, a controversial figure in the expatriate community. He was taken into custody at Times Square, Manhattan, at 1:55 AM on Friday, October 3, according to police sources.

The operation was conducted with the assistance of complainant Shakti Gupta. Multiple sources say Mazumdar has faced long-standing allegations of fraud, financial irregularities, and creating religious divisions.

He reportedly made offensive remarks about Hindu and other religious communities on social media, sparking widespread anger. In business circles, he has been accused of fraudulent activities, including misusing funds collected for festival donations and ticket sales.

Members of the New York Puja organizing committee stated that during last year’s Durga Puja, Mazumdar had to publicly apologize for allegedly embezzling around $11,000 from ticket sales. Investigations are also underway regarding funds collected under artists’ names and money taken for purchasing idols but not returned.

Shakti Gupta said, “Dinesh Mazumdar is not only a fraudster but also tried to disrupt communal harmony in the expatriate community.”

Many in the expatriate community are hailing the arrest as a victory of justice, viewing it as an important precedent to curb malpractices abroad.

Mazumdar has not made any public comment regarding the allegations.
