China Demands Immediate Release of Venezuela’s Maduro

5 January, 2026, 1:35 pm

China has called on the United States to release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife following their capture in a U.S. operation in Caracas. The Chinese Foreign Ministry described the strike as a “clear violation of international law.”

In a statement, China urged Washington to ensure the personal safety of Maduro and his family, halt any actions aimed at toppling the Venezuelan government, and release the detained leaders immediately.

The statement comes as Maduro remains in a New York detention center, while former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that the U.S. would temporarily oversee Venezuelan affairs, a claim contested by Maduro’s allies.

China’s response highlights growing international concern over the legality and political implications of the operation in Venezuela.
