Calls for CCTV Review After Journalist Sabeth Sathi Arrested in New York

A Bangladeshi journalist has been arrested in New York following allegations of assault during a community event. Police detained Sabeth Sathi, editor of Bangla Press, outside the LaGuardia Marriott Hotel on Saturday night after businessman Shahnawaz accused him of attacking his office assistant, Anik Raj.

However, Prompting demands from Sathi’s family and members of the Bangladeshi community to review hotel CCTV footage. They argue that the footage could reveal the actual sequence of incident.

Mr Sathi’s family say he was the victim of an attack and had also called police. They claim officers responded first to Mr Shahnawaz’s call and arrested the journalist without hearing his account.

Eyewitnesses and Mr Shahnawaz allege Mr Sathi and several others assaulted Mr Raj along with two companions Zahed Alam, and Azizul Haque. The injured man Raj has been admitted to hospital.

Mr Shahnawaz later briefed reporters, repeating his allegations against the editor.

Community members have urged an impartial investigation, saying hotel CCTV footage should clarify what happened.
