Bangladeshi Entrepreneur Finds Success with Handmade Perfumes in New York
A young Bangladeshi entrepreneur has found success in New York by turning perfume-making into an art form. Farid Khondokar Akhtar runs a small shop at Buffalo Trade Center, where he handcrafts perfumes in just minutes, tailoring each fragrance to customer demand.
Perfume, he says, is more than just a scent, it is a blend of memory, personality and artistry. His process combines science with aesthetics: carefully measuring essential oils, testing fragrances on strips and skin, and ensuring balance and longevity. Bottles, packaging and design are all part of the finished product.
“Any brand of perfume can be prepared here in five minutes,” Mr Khondokar told the BBC. “Our prices are far lower than the market, but the quality remains the same. We keep prices affordable for our customers, while also offering wholesale at discounted rates.”
Inside his modest shop, shelves lined with oils and bottles create an atmosphere filled with fragrance. Customers can watch their perfumes being made before taking them home.
Shoppers say the experience is unique. “It’s amazing to see the perfume prepared right in front of you. The prices are affordable, and the quality is excellent,” one customer said.
Community members view the business as a source of pride and inspiration. “This kind of initiative shows how creativity and hard work can turn into a successful venture. It’s an example for other young entrepreneurs in our community,” said one supporter.
Mr Khondokar hopes his growing customer base will continue to expand, making handmade perfumes a signature of his entrepreneurial journey in New York.
