Shamsul Haque, a prominent figure in the Bangladeshi-American community, has been appointed chair of a special commission tasked with improving New York City’s school bus system. The appointment was made by Greg Fackler, chairman of the Educational Policy Panel. The commission will tackle long-standing issues such as bus delays, miscommunication, pickup and drop-off irregularities, and daily inconveniences faced by parents.

A former president and co-founder of the Bangladeshi-American Police Association, Haque recently retired from the New York City Police Department at the rank of lieutenant, earning a reputation for integrity and dedication. Since then, he has devoted himself to community and educational initiatives.

The commission will begin its work by providing clear recommendations to the Department of Education (DOE) and the Educational Policy Panel. Its primary goal is to create an efficient and safe transportation system, engaging parents, teachers, bus companies, unions, and all relevant stakeholders.

Hailing from Bagha Union in Golapganj, Sylhet, Haque immigrated to the U.S. with his family as a child. He has served on the Board of Trustees at New York City University and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University. As a parent of two and a long-time education advocate, his experience uniquely positions him to lead the commission.

Upon assuming the role, Haque stated, “Our goal is to ensure safe, timely, and reliable transportation for students.” On social media, he added, “Friends, I have been appointed chair of the special commission for improving New York City’s school bus system. I will work closely with fellow commission members, the DOE, parents, bus companies, unions, and other stakeholders. Your feedback and advice will be invaluable.”

The appointment is a matter of pride for the Bangladeshi-American community. A well-functioning transportation system is not only a demand of parents and teachers but of the entire society. Under Haque’s leadership, the commission is expected to deliver tangible improvements, offering New York City students and parents a safer and smoother school commute.
