In a rare display of political unity, the Bangladeshi-American community in the Bronx has consolidated support behind a single candidate for the 87th Assembly District. On October 20, the community held a lively debate and electronic vote at the Golden Palace Party Hall.

The event featured three Bangladeshi-origin candidates—Zakir Chowdhury, Imran M. Shah, and Jamal Husein—who presented their experience, community initiatives, and future plans. Moderated by writer and filmmaker Shamim Al Amin, the two-hour discussion highlighted the candidates’ commitment to the community.

Following the debate, 55 voters participated in an electronic election. Each candidate invited ten voters, while the remaining 25 votes came from organizing committee members. CPA Zakir Chowdhury emerged as the winner, and the other two candidates warmly congratulated him, pledging full support.

Analysts note that such initiatives strengthen political cohesion and engagement within immigrant communities. Organizers emphasized that the event was independently arranged by the community, not affiliated with the New York Board of Elections, showcasing a significant step in grassroots democratic practice.

Key organizers of the successful event included Abdul Mumin, Riaz Uddin Kamran, Abdul Shahid, Mohammad Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, Abdul Hashim Hasnu, Nurus Samad Chowdhury, Ahad Ali, and several others. Facilitators included Masud Ur Rahman, Mohammad N. Majumdar, and Abdul Chowdhury.

The united support positions Zakir Chowdhury to challenge incumbent Assemblymember Karynes Reyes, who has held the seat since 2019.
