The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is set to begin on Tuesday, September 9, at the UN headquarters in New York. Representatives from nearly all member states are expected to attend this global forum. Annalena Baerbock will preside over this year’s session. On the opening day, along with the president’s address, UN Secretary-General António Guterres will outline key directives on peace, security, climate change, human rights, and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year’s session will focus extensively on global conflicts, particularly the Ukraine crisis, tensions in the Middle East, poverty and inequality reduction, as well as the impacts of climate change. Proposals will also be raised on tackling the external debt crisis faced by developing nations and ensuring economic stability in the Global South.

Heads of state and government, including Bangladesh’s leadership, will participate in the general debate in September, highlighting their national interests, global challenges, and commitments to peace. Analysts believe that amid current international dynamics, this session could provide new direction for global diplomacy.
