Democrats Take Control of House, Securing Full Control of US Congress

The Democratic Party is set to take control of the US House of Representatives, following its victory in the Senate, giving Democrats control of both chambers of Congress for the first time in several years.

Democrats have secured at least 220 seats in the 435-member House, surpassing the 218 needed for a majority, according to election results reported by US media. Analysts projected that the party could eventually win as many as 255 seats.

The results mark a major setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, as voters delivered a strong rebuke to the administration’s policies.

Democrats made significant gains in several Republican-held districts across the country, including in Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Indiana, Colorado and North Carolina.

In Pennsylvania, four Republican incumbents lost their seats. Democrat Elaine Luria reclaimed her former seat in Virginia, while Shannon Taylor defeated longtime Republican Representative Rob Wittman. In New Jersey, Republican Representative Tom Kean Jr. lost to Democrat Rebecca Bennett.

Other notable Democratic victories included the defeat of Republican Representative Victoria Spartz in Indiana and Richard Hudson in North Carolina.

Political analysts say public dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies played a significant role in the Democratic gains. Key concerns included the administration’s immigration crackdown, the ongoing war with Iran, tariffs on US trading partners and rising costs of fuel and essential goods.

With control of both the House and Senate, Democrats will gain greater influence over congressional legislation, investigations and oversight of the Trump administration.

The new Congress is scheduled to take office on January 3, 2027. Trump will then face a Democratic-controlled Congress during the final two years of his second term, potentially making it more difficult for his administration to advance its legislative agenda.
