Four Canadian soldiers were killed and dozens of others injured after a major fire spread into a military training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, officials said.

The fire broke out Saturday afternoon after flames from a grass fire, reportedly fueled by strong winds, spread toward the training grounds. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the military’s devastating tragedies and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

The deceased soldiers were identified as Sergeant Morgan Wong, Private Sean Farrell, Private Aidan Golding and Private Hayden Lykemark, according to the report. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said Sunday that at least 19 of the 39 injured people receiving hospital treatment were in critical condition.

Major General Wade Rutland said infantry personnel were conducting intensive combat training involving live ammunition in designated training areas when the fire spread unexpectedly. The base had several training activities underway, including exercises involving grenades and small arms.

Authorities said the fire was under control, but emergency crews remained at the scene to prevent it from spreading again. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and officials said there was no evidence linking the incident to terrorism or outside interference.

The incident also placed significant pressure on nearby healthcare facilities. Emergency medical teams deployed ambulances, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters to transport injured personnel for treatment.

Located about 210 kilometers east of Edmonton, Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is a major military training facility used by Canadian troops and personnel from allied countries. The investigation into the deadly incident is ongoing.
