Bangladesh Bank Raises Annual Travel Quota to $18,000
Bangladesh Bank has increased the annual foreign exchange travel entitlement for Bangladeshi citizens traveling abroad from $12,000 to $18,000, providing greater flexibility for legitimate overseas travel expenses.
The central bank issued a circular on Sunday revising the existing travel entitlement for adult Bangladeshi nationals residing in the country. The new limit represents a 50% increase, or an additional $6,000 per person annually.
Under the revised rules, authorized dealers can release foreign currency of up to $18,000, or its equivalent in other currencies, to an adult Bangladeshi national for overseas travel during a calendar year.
Bangladesh Bank said the decision was made to facilitate genuine foreign exchange requirements related to international travel and to reflect the changing needs of Bangladeshi travelers.
The entitlement will apply on a calendar-year basis. For children under 12, the existing provision will remain unchanged, with the allowable amount set at 50% of the adult entitlement.
However, the central bank has retained the existing restriction on cash U.S. dollar notes. Travelers will still be allowed to receive a maximum of $5,000 in cash per person within the applicable annual travel entitlement.
The revised limit is expected to give Bangladeshi travelers greater flexibility in covering legitimate overseas expenses, including tourism, family visits and other permitted travel purposes.
