Bangladesh Society of New York Election Set for October 18

The election of the Bangladesh Society of New York, one of the largest organizations representing Bangladeshi immigrants in the United States, will be held on Sunday, October 18.

Chief Election Commissioner Abu Naser announced the election schedule at a press conference on Tuesday, August 11, at the society’s office in Queens.

Although more than 300,000 Bangladeshis live in New York, the society currently has 35,269 registered members. Only members who have paid the $20 membership fee will be eligible to vote in the election.

The seven-member Election Commission is headed by Abu Naser. Other members are Badrul Hossain Khan, Shamsuddin Azad, Ruhul Amin Sarker, Ahbab Chowdhury, Mia Mohammad Dulal and Mitu Hamid.

According to the announced schedule, nomination forms will be available from August 25 and must be submitted by August 30. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until September 3, while the final list of candidates will be published on September 4.

The nomination fee has been set at $6,000 for the president’s position and $5,000 for the general secretary’s position. Fees have also been set for other positions.

Several candidates have already begun campaigning for the election. Two major panels are expected to compete in the race. One panel is being led by Ataur Rahman Selim and Mohammad Ali, while the other is being led by Azmal Hossain Kunu and Firoz Ahmed.

Syed Rabbi has announced that he will contest independently for the position of general secretary.

Voting will take place at polling centers in the Bronx, Woodside and Jamaica in Queens, and Fulton and Ozone Park in Brooklyn.

Polling will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 10 p.m.

The election is expected to draw significant attention from the Bangladeshi community in New York, given the society’s longstanding role in representing and supporting Bangladeshi immigrants in the city.
