Abdul El-Sayed Wins Democratic Senate Primary in Michigan, Moves Closer to Historic Bid
Progressive populist leader Abdul El-Sayed has won the Democratic primary election for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, defeating a well-funded establishment-backed challenger in a closely contested race.
The 41-year-old former public health official defeated U.S. Representative Haley Stevens, who had received support from Democratic Party establishment figures and pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC. According to Associated Press results, with more than 95 percent of precincts reporting, El-Sayed secured 48.5 percent of the vote, while Stevens received 47.5 percent.
Born to Egyptian immigrant parents, El-Sayed is a physician and public health expert. A Rhodes Scholar, he studied at the University of Oxford before earning his medical degree from Columbia University. He later served as executive director of the Detroit Health Department, becoming one of the youngest officials to lead a major city health agency in the country.
El-Sayed previously ran for Michigan governor in the 2018 Democratic primary but was defeated by more established candidates. However, ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, he rebuilt his political momentum with a campaign focused on progressive policies and grassroots support.
In the November general election, El-Sayed will face Republican candidate Mike Rogers for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator Gary Peters. If elected, he would become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history.
A major factor behind El-Sayed’s campaign has been his strong opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. He has described the destruction in Gaza as a genocide and called for an end to unconditional U.S. military assistance. He has also argued that taxpayer money should be invested in domestic priorities such as healthcare and education rather than overseas conflicts.
Beyond foreign policy, El-Sayed has campaigned on a progressive platform that includes reducing corporate influence in politics, establishing universal healthcare through a “Medicare for All” system, and restructuring the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
Political analysts say El-Sayed’s victory is significant because Michigan is considered a key swing state, where Donald Trump won the presidential elections in both 2016 and 2024. A progressive Muslim candidate’s success in such a competitive political environment highlights shifting voter priorities, according to observers.
El-Sayed has said that many Americans are increasingly looking for leaders who are connected to ordinary people rather than politicians aligned with corporate interests. His upcoming battle against Republican Mike Rogers in November will be closely watched as Democrats fight to maintain control of the Senate.
