Shooting at Mosque and Islamic School in San Diego Leaves 3 Dead
Three people have been killed in a shooting at a mosque and Islamic school complex in San Diego, California, in an incident that authorities are investigating as a possible hate-motivated attack. According to San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl, two teenage suspects, believed to be aged 17 and 19, also died at the scene and are suspected to have taken their own lives after carrying out the attack.
Officials said the incident is being treated as a potential hate crime due to the location of the shooting at an Islamic center, although investigators have not yet confirmed the motive. Police added that one of the victims was a security guard at the Islamic center, whose actions may have helped prevent further casualties during the attack. Authorities confirmed that all three victims were adults and that no children inside the Islamic school were physically harmed.
Following the shooting, police initially issued an active shooter alert before later confirming that the situation had been brought under control. Investigators are continuing to examine how the suspects gained access to the facility and what events led up to the attack, while security has been increased at religious institutions across the region as a precaution.
Community leaders and officials across the United States have condemned the attack. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said the city has “no place for hatred” and pledged support for the safety of religious communities. The Islamic Center of San Diego described the facility as a place of worship, education, and community gathering for both Muslims and non-Muslims, calling the incident deeply distressing.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said it is coordinating with law enforcement and closely monitoring the situation, while the FBI confirmed that its local unit is assisting in the investigation. In response, the New York Police Department has also increased security around mosques and Islamic centers, stating that there are no direct threats but precautionary measures are being taken nationwide.
