Grand Bengali New Year Celebration Held by University Alumni Groups in New York

The Bengali New Year 1433 was celebrated in a vibrant and festive atmosphere in New York, where a joint university alumni event brought together members of the Bangladeshi diaspora in a large cultural gathering.

Held under the slogan “Weaving unity with threads of tradition, live joyfully in the new year,” the event featured participation from alumni associations of several leading universities of Bangladesh, making it one of the most significant community celebrations of the year.

The program took place on Sunday at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Jamaica, New York. The celebration began in the afternoon with a colorful Bengali New Year parade, followed by cultural performances, award presentations, and a traditional Baishakhi fair.

Dignitaries attending the event included Bangladesh’s Consul General in New York, Muhammad Mozammel Haque, as the chief guest. Special guests included Engineer Mahfuzul Haque, President and CEO of Social Adult Day Care Center, and Shifa Amin, Administrative representative of All County Healthcare and Naban Restaurant Group.

Participants said the event played an important role in reconnecting the diaspora community with their cultural roots. Many also emphasized that such celebrations help introduce younger generations to Bengali traditions, heritage, and festivities.

The event was organized by the Jahangirnagar University Alumni Association of America, alongside participating groups including the University of Dhaka Alumni Association USA Inc., Rajshahi University Alumni Association USA, Chittagong University Alumni Association North America Inc., Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Alumni Association New York, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Alumni Association America, and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Alumni Association USA Inc.

Cultural performances by alumni from various universities added a lively and emotional touch to the celebration.

Organizing committee convener Meghna Pal and member secretary Prashanta Mallick Ayan thanked all attendees and expressed hopes of organizing the event on a larger scale in the future.
