Shots Fired as Trump Evacuated Unhurt from Washington Press Dinner
U.S. President Donald Trump was evacuated unharmed after shots were fired during a high-profile media event in Washington on Saturday night, triggering panic among attendees.
The incident occurred at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton, where hundreds of journalists, officials, and guests had gathered. According to authorities, the suspected gunman was detained at a security screening area outside the main ballroom.
Trump was quickly escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents as chaos unfolded inside the venue, with guests taking cover under tables. Security personnel rushed in, and tactical teams were deployed across the site.
In a statement on social media, Trump praised the swift response of law enforcement, saying the situation was handled “quickly and bravely.” He confirmed that the suspect had been apprehended and that all key officials, including First Lady Melania Trump and cabinet members, were safe.
The United States Secret Service later confirmed that one individual is in custody and that the shooting occurred near the main entrance screening zone.
The event was initially set to continue but was later postponed due to security concerns. Trump said the dinner would be rescheduled within a month and that he would soon address the media from the White House.
The annual dinner, often referred to as the “Nerd Prom,” brings together journalists, politicians, and public figures to celebrate the press and raise funds for scholarships. This marked Trump’s first attendance at the event while in office, despite his longstanding criticism of the media.
The venue has historical significance, as it was also the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the shooting.
