Bangladesh has called for enhanced international cooperation to bridge the global digital divide and strengthen data systems during its statement at the 59th Session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development (CPD59) held at UN Headquarters in New York.

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, emphasized the need to improve research capacity, expand digital infrastructure, and promote the ethical use of emerging technologies with strong data privacy protections.

He noted that nearly one-third of the global population still lacks internet access, limiting opportunities in essential areas such as education, healthcare, and public services. He also urged increased investment in digital skills development, particularly for women and youth, alongside greater international cooperation and technology transfer.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s domestic progress, the Ambassador pointed to significant improvements in maternal health outcomes, expanded immunization coverage, strengthened community healthcare systems, and increased women’s empowerment initiatives. He also referenced the growing use of digital health tools, including telemedicine services and real-time disease surveillance systems.

At the same time, he acknowledged ongoing global and national challenges, including rapid urbanization, climate change impacts, and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, which continue to hinder sustainable development efforts.

The statement reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to leveraging innovation, research, and inclusive digital transformation to achieve the goals of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
