A memorial was held in Jamaica, New York, to honor the memory of Detective Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi-American officer of the New York Police Department (NYPD), who was killed in a terrorist shooting. The event took place on August 1 at 7 p.m. in a park located at the corner of 175th Street in Jamaica. It was jointly organized by community organization Bhalo, the Bangladesh Society, and the Jamaica Friends Society.

To pay tribute to Detective Didarul, the event was attended by New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, New York State Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar, President of the Bangladesh Society Ataur Rahman Selim, founder of Bhalo Shahriar Rahman, President of the Jamaica Friends Society Fakhrul Islam Delwar, as well as local elected officials and leaders from various Bangladeshi community organizations.

Speakers at the memorial described Didarul Islam not just as a dedicated police officer but as a committed member of the broader community. His tragic death has deeply saddened the Bangladeshi diaspora in New York and beyond.

A special prayer and dua were offered for the forgiveness of Detective Didarul’s soul. The prayer was led by Imam Shamsi Rahman.

It is worth mentioning that Didarul hailed from Kulaura in Moulvibazar, Bangladesh. He moved to the United States permanently in 2009. He lived in a modest home in the Bronx with his wife Jameela Akter, their two sons aged five and seven, and his parents. The couple was expecting their third child in the coming weeks.
