New York to Become More Affordable for Workers: Mayor Mamdani

2 January, 2026, 11:57 am

Newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced plans to make New York City more affordable for working residents. He unveiled the initiative following his swearing-in ceremony on Thursday.

Speaking to the public, Mamdani said, “Those wealthy elites who think they can buy democracy will not be accountable to themselves. We will be accountable to the people of New York.” He added that ensuring affordable housing for everyday residents is “not unusual, but the right and just thing to do.”

The ceremony was attended by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, won a key victory in last November’s election, signaling potential influence on upcoming midterm contests.

Many of New York’s eight million residents hope Mamdani will be a transformative political force, working to ease the cost of living and improve affordability for workers.
