Winter Storm Brings Travel Disruption Across 14 US States

13 December, 2025, 7:10 am

A powerful winter storm has swept across large parts of the United States, dumping heavy snow from the Midwest to New England and causing widespread disruption to travel.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings and advisories across 14 states as the fast-moving system combined two storm fronts, creating hazardous road conditions. Authorities reported hundreds of traffic accidents, along with school delays and closures in several areas.

Minnesota was among the worst affected states, where overnight snowfall made driving extremely dangerous. State police recorded more than 550 crashes and vehicles spinning out of control, with at least one fatal accident confirmed. Snowfall totals reached about nine inches in Vergas, while other parts of the state reported even heavier accumulation.

Elsewhere in the region, North Dakota recorded up to 11 inches of snow, Wyoming saw nearly 9.5 inches, and parts of Wisconsin received around 7.5 inches. The severe conditions forced dozens of school districts in Minnesota to delay the start of classes.

As the initial storm system moved into the Interior Northeast, a second system followed closely behind, threatening further disruption. Forecasters warned of additional heavy snowfall stretching from Iowa to Kentucky.

Up to a foot of snow is expected in parts of upstate New York, with similar totals possible in northeast Ohio. Some areas could receive an additional six inches of snow as the second storm intensifies.

Winter weather advisories remain in effect across several states, including Montana, the Dakotas, Michigan, and much of New England. Officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, warning that conditions are likely to remain challenging through the end of the week.
