Community Leader GM Mahmud Mia Farewelled with Deep Respect

The Bangladeshi community in the UK bid a heartfelt farewell to prominent social worker and politician Alhaj Golam Mohammad (GM) Mahmud Mia.

His funeral was held on Monday, October 27, at Birmingham Central Mosque after Zuhr prayers, led by his son Sheikh Hatim Mia Mojammil. He was later laid to rest at a local cemetery.

GM Mahmud Mia passed away at his home in Birmingham on October 24 at 12:14 a.m. at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife, four sons, two daughters, grandchildren, and numerous admirers.

A native of Balikandi village in Sadar Upazila, Moulvibazar, he was a long-serving president of the Canada Awami League, founder president of the Sylhet Division of Quebec, former president of Canada Bangla School, and a leader in various social and expatriate organizations.

He contributed significantly to education, culture, and social development in Sylhet and Moulvibazar, supporting local mosques, madrasas, and other institutions. He also chaired Daily Sylhet & Moulvibazar Dotcom and was associated with UK BD TV.

His passing has cast a deep shadow of grief across the expatriate community. UK BD TV, in a condolence message, prayed for his soul and extended sympathies to his bereaved family.

The statement described GM Mahmud Mia as a selfless social worker and a bridge connecting communities in Bangladesh, Canada, and the UK. His death leaves an irreplaceable void in the community.
