Days of Leniency for Illegal Immigrants Are Over: Trump

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 06: Federal agents patrol the halls of immigration court at the Jacob K. Javitz Federal Building on August 06, 2025 in New York City. Detentions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continue as people attend immigration court hearings. The agency is eliminating the age cap for new hires to allow people older than 40 to join its force as it continues to carry out the Trump administration's mass deportation agenda. US President Donald Trump has renewed his hardline rhetoric on immigration after the killing of an Indian national in Dallas by a Cuban immigrant.
Police said 37-year-old Cuban national Cobos Martinez slit the throat of Chandramouli Nagamallaiah, a hotel owner originally from Kerala, India, following an argument over the use of a washing machine at the Downtown Suites Motel on Wednesday. The victim’s wife and child reportedly witnessed the attack.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over public safety in the US. Amid the debate, Trump expressed anger on social media, calling it another example of the dangers posed by illegal immigration.
“I heard about the murder of Chandramouli Nagamallaiah. He was a respected man in Dallas. In front of his wife and child, his throat was cut by an illegal immigrant from Cuba,” Trump wrote.
“This man should never have been allowed into the country,” he continued. “He had already been arrested before on charges of child abuse and car theft. But Joe Biden’s failed administration couldn’t keep him detained. Even Cuba doesn’t want him back.”
Promising stricter measures, Trump declared: “The days of being soft on illegal immigrants are now over — rest assured. Our officials are working, and we will make America safe again. This criminal is in custody, and he will face the maximum punishment for murder.”
Martinez, who was employed at the same motel, is now facing charges of homicide. Police said the killing was the result of a violent altercation that turned deadly.
