New York City Council Overrides Mayor’s Veto on Grocery Bill

The New York City Council has overridden Mayor Eric Adams’ veto of the controversial grocery bill, which mandates higher pay for delivery workers by third-party grocery services.

The bill, sponsored by Council member Sandy Nurse, passed with an overwhelming majority. It requires delivery companies to pay workers at least the minimum wage set by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, ensuring fair compensation for grocery deliveries.

Nurse said, “Today we said no to poverty wages and to a mayor who abandoned his working-class constituents.” Progressives noted that the new law could raise delivery drivers’ hourly pay to over $21 per hour.

Council member Jennifer Gutierrez criticized Mayor Adams’ veto, saying it was not only disappointing but also dismissive of the city’s labor force. She added, “These bills are about protecting the safety and livelihoods of delivery workers.”

Critics argue that supermarkets and delivery companies may face higher operational costs, potentially affecting prices for consumers.
